Le Tour de WTF

So 2-3 days before the Tour de France began, I started writing a giddy anticipation post. In the middle of editing that one, the news broke about Operacion Puerto claiming Ullrich and Basso (and by way of teammates, Vinokourov) among others. That was so rattling that I opted not to post at all, and [...]

Much Ado in Evanston

In a former life, I worked for Northwestern University, after picking up an unexpected advanced degree. During my time there, I became a somewhat fanatical college football fan, due to Big 10(11) proximity and the presence of large numbers of football players in the program that employed me … I knew the guys on the [...]

Productive Weekend

Friday night, I began the mash for a batch of foreign-style stout (stronger than normal, more robust roastiness, hoppier). This to save time on Saturday morning, so we would fit in all the other stuff going on. Saturday morning, the sparge was running by 7:45AM!
2530 2534 [...]

Thought Lance Retired

Ivan Basso putting on the Armstrong Face while kicking everyone else’s ass at the Giro yesterday. Or is that Lance putting on a Basso costume?
For reference, here’s the Armstrong Face:

Updates? What is this, a blog?

So I started this thing with the intent to write semi-often. As per usual, I’ve fallen off drastically. Well, here’s the magical “How Stuff’s Going” catch-up post!
Ager Acres: We have a mole … or fifty. Seriously, the ground is chewed up to an unreal degree. Something drastic might have to be done. [...]

The Pittsburgh Steelers, Cryptodynasty … almost

Slate had this great article on “crypto-dynasties” in sports — the teams/players who do consistently well, but never actually manage to win.
Over in cycling, Poulidor comes to mind as the greatest crypto-dynast, with Jan Ullrich coming close, with that one pesky Tour win nagging at him.
Kind of a disappointing Super Bowl from a game perspective [...]

Ager-Worthy

OK, what the hell is going on with the “Ager” name and basketball players? (See also Multi-Tasking below.)

Multi-Tasking

Ager, Davis power Spartans past No. 6 BC
I dearly hope MSU player Maurice Ager goes pro and has a good career. Then I can look forward to a few more years of headlines involving my name, but not me. Heh, heh, heh.

Various stuff

Penn Jillette recently took part in NPR’s ongoing series, This I Believe. His essay, linked in his name at the beginning, was the first one I’ve heard that moves beyond the inherent triteness of the form. Yes, it’s nice to hear diverse voices proclaiming earnestly about their deeply-held beliefs, but in the hands [...]

Le Tour, Landlording, Lamaze

Catching up a bit here…
Le Tour
By now it’s almost old news that Lance Armstrong won his 7th Tour de France, and has retired from cycling. Not even worth linking to an article at this point. I watched the entirety of this year’s coverage, from the eye-popping initial time trial in which he blew [...]
