Lester and Eliza meet the Grups
![]()
Lester and Eliza have long been a shorthand in this family for those couples we saw in NYC who resembled us in both physical appearance and in manner.
Now, it turns out, we get a New York Magazine feature article about veritable legions of Lesters and Elizas. And our dress/work/parenting/shopping habits.

Note the two on the right. Lester and Eliza! For us, of course, not Bart and Lisa. Duh.
Anyway, it is of course a rather different appearance and lifestyle up here in New Hampshire as compared to NYC, but taking into account those differences, we certainly qualify as the local version of Grups. Not that I mind! In fact, it’s far, far easier up here, since there’s none of the intense culture competition that goes on in NYC, and particularly Park Slope, our old ‘hood.
The other key difference is that for people like us, who both grew up in and now work in academic environments, the quasi-revolution of hipster 45-year-olds has never been that much of a revelation. Colleges and universities have had a way of joining youth culture and “grown-up” culture for quite some time, and though it’s not seamless by any means, the join is more streamlined and rooted than its citified relative.
